Can You Be Successful Selling on the Internet?

Anyone who has ever dreamed of making money online has probably entertained the idea of selling on the internet. And why not? The World Wide Web is a fantastic resource for any small business owner. While there is a lot of opportunity for success, there is also a lot of competition. You can increase your chances of becoming successful with selling on the internet if you plan well.

The first thing you want to consider is what vehicle you want to use to sell goods online. Many people like sites like EBay for their efforts and this site can work very well for some. Selling on the internet can be quite easy if you use a system like this. There are a few things to consider before starting with EBay.

You have to get a PayPal account. Sure, you can still have some success selling on the internet through EBay without this kind of convenient account, but it’s pretty likely that some customers will forego your products just because they prefer to pay with a nice secure middle man like PayPal.

While many love to use a site like EBay for selling on the internet, there is another valuable option that you may want to consider. You can build your own online store. The process is easier than you think and the start-up cost is surprisingly inexpensive. If you have great products to sell, an online store may be the right option for you.  Personally, I started with an online store at http://petbedsunlimited.com

The first things you want to consider are the layout of your online store, the overall design, as well as the products that you are going to sell. All of this is very important and it’s a good idea to have your store organized in your mind. Selling on the internet is easier when you have an attractive website.

The website is important but if you have no visitors you really have nothing more than a pretty site that has little potential for selling on the internet. Your online store needs visitors aside from your friends and family to be successful. This may seem a little overwhelming considering the many other sites that may be selling similar items online, but there is help out there for you.  Adding a blog to your online store is a good move as it provides a resource for your customers to get to know you, and get additional information about things associated with your products. You should also monetize it and use it to give your online store backlinks.

If you’re not comfortable driving traffic on your own, hook yourself up with a company that is proficient in getting traffic to your site. Many of these organizations offer complementary services that are very valuable when you create your online store. Be sure to check with your store provider or web host to see if they provide any assistance in getting traffic. If not, do a search for companies that provide this service. Yes, you may pay a fee for their service, but increasing your traffic potential makes a sound investment.

I would like to start an online bussiness but am wondering what product(s) to sell. Should I go with something I am interested in or a product that is already proven. How do I find out about places to supply a product, ie wholesalers? These are some of my initial questions.

Thank you,
Lisa

Hi Lisa,

Thanks for stopping by. As far as your questions, I would recommend going with something you are interested in. This will make it easier for you to stay engaged.

As far as where to get products, there are several answers to that. If you plan to promote affiliate products you can either go to Clickbank.com, Amazon.com or CommissionJunction.com to find products to promote; or you can build your own store and submit an application to specific vendors to include their products as an affiliate. An example of this would be another passion of mine and that’s dogs and cats. I have an affiliate store you can look at… go to http://petbedsunlimited.com.

If you want to get products wholesale, I recommend dropshippers, you’ll have to do some research. Check out The Thomas Registry at http://www.thomasnet.com. There you can search by product type and find manufacturers for all kinds of products. You’ll then have to contact the manufacturers that interest you. Be sure to ask if they sell wholesale and if they dropship.

Hope that helps you,
Debbie
